Mercedes Clara Haverkamp, 95, of Remsen, Iowa, died Sunday, March 8, 2015, at Bavarian Meadows in Remsen, Iowa.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 13, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2015. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Mercedes Clara Delperdang was born on April 11, 1919, in Remsen, Iowa, the daughter of Clara (Majeres) and George Delperdang. Mercedes was raised along with five brothers on a farm north of Remsen. Mercedes loved to go to dances with her brothers. On August 27, 1940, Mercedes married Bernard Haverkamp at St. Mary’s Church and moved to a farm south of Remsen. In addition to her family, Mercedes enjoyed gardening, travel, cooking, sewing, reading, crocheting, and knitting. She also did many hours of volunteer work for the church and community. In 1981 Mercedes and Bernard moved to town. Bernard died in 1987. In 2009 Mercedes moved into Bavarian Meadows.
Survivors include five children: Gale Haverkamp of Remsen; Diane (Dennis) Woods of Aurora, CO; Frank Haverkamp of Fallbrook, CA; Tom (Geralyn) Haverkamp of Remsen; and Anita (Marcus) Boehm of Las Vegas, NV.
There are 11 grandchildren: Christy (Darin) Pomerleau, Michelle (Dan) Ten Napel, Nicole (Jason) Sadler, and Chad (Anne) Haverkamp, Jason Haverkamp and Jill (Steve) Skullerud, Krista (Andy) Ash, Sarah (Travis), Brian, Kendra, and Matt (Mandi) Haverkamp. There are fourteen great-grandchildren.
Mercedes is survived in death by her brother Marvin (Rita) of San Diego, brother Milton of Marcus, and Tony (Audrey) of Remsen.
Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents George and Clara, her husband Bernard, her son Rick, two brothers Gerald and Dale, and three sisters-in-law, Edith, Audrey Mae, and Kay.
Casket bearers are Matt Haverkamp, Andy Ash, Travis Ellis, Dan Ten Napel, Chad Haverkamp, and Dan Block.
