He was raised and educated in the Marcus area graduating from Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn High School with the Class of 1991. Mike enjoyed playing baseball from Little League through college. Following graduation, he played softball for a short time with the Marcus Merchants. He owned Mayer Feedlot and become a partner with M&O Farms and helping manage T&M Cattle. He also spent countless hours raising broiler chickens for family, friends, and neighbors, bottle-feeding calves, and working with farrow-to-finish hogs.

When he wasn't farming, Mike enjoyed golfing, fishing, reading, watching westerns, learning about history, visiting train museums and collecting toy train. He especially looked forward to attending Minnesota Twins games and the College World Series with his friend, Tom Hohbach. He also enjoyed taking three-wheeler rides to visit his baby sister, collecting and restoring old John Deere tractors, and giving tractor rides to children whenever he had the chance. Above all Mike cherished his family, he adored his wife and children, especially Alaina, and their midnight rides. He enjoyed to just go for drives.
