Mrs. Harold (Phyllis) Niichel, 78 years old, of Granville, IA passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen with Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Granville. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time on Friday all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Phyllis was born on July 17, 1935, the daughter of David and Nora (Luchterhandt) Smith at Larrabee, IA. She was raised and educated in the Marcus area.
On May 26, 1953 she married Harold Niichel at Granville. The couple farmed in the Granville area their entire life. Phyllis was a devoted wife and mother. She stayed at home to raise their three children and to help manage the family farm and business and tend to their many pets. In her spare time, Phyllis loved to fish, play euchre and board games, go to garage sales and spend time with her children and grandchildren. She especially enjoyed Sunday outings with her husband. She also loved to cook for large family gatherings.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 60 years, Harold of Granville; three children, Alan Niichel, Debra (Paul) Schmidt all of Granville, Lori Niichel of Joice, IA; eight grandchildren, Wendy (Jon) Heie of Brooklyn Park, MN, Rick (Brenda) Gergen of Paullina, IA, Mikayla Schmidt of Granville, Kenny Doughty of Sheldon, IA, Eric Doughty and Fiancee, Nichole Gruis of Melvin, IA, Holly Doughty of Hartley, IA, Tara Doughty of Joice, IA, Marylynn Thornock of Denison, IA; six great-grandchildren, Madeline and Jake Heie, Daltyn Collier, Chloe and Aspen Gergen, Kendal Doughty; one brother, Alvin “Ab” (Donna) Smith of Marcus, IA; one sister-in-law, Audrey Smith of Yankton, SD.
Preceded in death by, her parents, one brother, Leonard R.D. Smith, one sister, Elvera Dunn, a grandson, Nicholas Gergen and one infant grandson, Carter Koontz.
Casket Bearers will be, Rick Gergen, Jon Heie, Tom, Terry and Chuck Rabel, John Cain.
