Randal “Randy” Paul Gengler, 70 years old, of Oyens, Iowa passed away after a short illness on Monday, February 14, 2022, surrounded by his family at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center in Sioux City, IA.  

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 18, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, IA with Father Timothy Pick officiating, Father Tim Hogan concelebrating and Deacon Doug Heeren assisting.  Burial will follow at the St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Oyens.  Graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen.  Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, there will be a parish rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.  Visitation will resume 1 hour prior to the funeral on Friday at the funeral home. 

 

Randy was born on January 11, 1952 in LeMars, IA to Al M. and Shirley (Singer) Gengler. He grew up on a farm southwest of Remsen and attended Remsen St. Mary’s grade school and high school, where he graduated in 1970. Randy enlisted in the lowa National Guard in 1971 and was stationed at Fort Leonard, MO for 6 months. He was honorably discharged in 1977.  Randy worked for Remsen Lumber Yard for 1 year. In 1972 he started working at Farmer's Coop in Oyens, becoming Location Manager in 1975. He spent 45 years at the Coop, retiring in 2017. 

 

He married Ann Harnack in Remsen on February 20, 1971. They lived in Remsen for 3 years before moving to Oyens in 1974. Randy was active in the Oyens Community where he had served on the town council, Oyens Fire Department and as an EMT with the Oyens Fire and Rescue. He was a former Member of St. Catherine's Parish and Finance Boards and the St. Catherine's/St. Mary's School Boards. He was a member of Remsen St. Mary's Catholic Church and former member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens.

 

Randy's faith and family were very important to him. He always enjoyed visiting with his mother Marge, reading, watching movies, golfing, searching for treasure with his metal detector, making beef jerky and head cheese, which he loved to share with his family and friends. He especially loved spending time in Florida with his family.

 

Randy is survived by his wife, Ann of Oyens, IA; Daughters, Kelli Farrell and her children, Tyler and Kaitlin; Amy (John) Riley and their children, Donovan and Andrew; and Jackie Gengler, all of Homestead, FL; Mother, Marge (Ken) Kohler of Remsen; Brothers, Bob (Doris) Gengler of Remsen, IA; Dan (Suzie) Gengler of Remsen, IA; Mike Gengler of LeMars; Sisters, Carole (Dick) Ludwig of Lawton; Carla (John) Weber of Marcus; Karyn (Steve) Flaspohler of Moulton; Mother-in-law, Pat Harnack of Remsen; In-Laws, Hank Canup of New Syrmna Beach, FL; Janet (Mike) Augustine of Sioux City; Lisa (Chris) Feller of Woodbine; Dave (Amy) Harnack of LeMars and numerous nieces and nephews. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kari, in infancy; sister, Kathy Canup; father-in-Law, Clayton Harnack and sister & brother-in-Law, Mary and Pat Sheehan.

 

Casket bearers will be Scott Sheehan, Brian Weber, Russ Feller, Keith Gengler, Josh Gengler and Colt Ludwig.
