Robert Bergner, 78 years old, of Remsen, IA, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at his home in Remsen, IA.
Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 5, 2010, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Graveside military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3328 & American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 4, 2010. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., and vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Bob was born Nov. 30, 1931, at Remsen, IA, the son of Chester & Margaret (Kobberman) Bergner. Bob was raised in Remsen. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in 1951. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 19, 1953. He served in the Korean War from 1952-1954 & was honorably discharged on Dec. 30, 1954.
On Nov. 12, 1956 he married Anna Marie Gerst at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, IA. Bob worked various jobs through out his life, farming the family farm, Community Co-Op & Bituminous Asphalt Co. both of Remsen & Grudman-Hicks Construction where he helped build houses and the Remsen Union High School. After leaving that career he and his father owned & operated Bergner Trucking where they transported livestock.
Robert was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 53 years, Ann of Remsen; One sister, Marjorie Gengler Reinert & her husband Melvin of Quimby, IA; Two brothers-in-law, Ronald Ludwig & his wife Alice of Alton, IA, John Johnson of Richlands, NC; One sister-in-law, Janice Cole & her husband Bob of Spotslvania, VA; Several cousins, nieces, nephews, caretakers & special friends Patti Colling of Sioux City, IA & Jessica Kelley and her daughter Socorra both of Sioux City, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Chester Bergner Jr. & his wife Doris (Harpenau); One brother-in-law, Ray Gengler; His mother & father-in-law, Chris & Hilda Gerst; Three sisters-in-law, Shirley Ludwig, Beverly Johnson, Edythe Scoblic & her husband John; Two nieces, Ann Scoblic, Kristy Ludwig.
