Robert Powell, age 96 of Remsen, IA passed away April 22, 2026 at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, IA.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen with Pastor Matt Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Remsen Community Cemetery. Military rights will be conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation with family present will be from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen, IA. www.fischfh.com.
Robert Dean Powell was born in Washta, IA, Oct. 15, 1929 the son of Dale and Marjorie (Preston) Powell. He grew up outside of Pierson and graduated from Grand Meadow high school near Washta, IA where he was a outstanding athlete in basketball and baseball. He then attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, IA on a baseball scholarship. He was drafted to play for the New York Giants, but missed out on the big league due to being drafted into the U.S. Navy in January, 1952 where he served as a Navy Fighter Pilot.
He married Joan Klingbeil on Dec. 23, 1952 at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen. The couple farmed and raised their family on the family farm approximately 8 miles north of Pierson, IA and just south of Marcus. He spent many years serving as a superintendent and teacher at Sunday School at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen.
Survivors include his wife Joan of Remsen, IA; three sons, Steven (Kay) of Le Mars, IA, Arnold (Kim) of Cape Coral, FL, and Gary (Laurie) of South Sioux City, NE. 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Powell of Pierson, IA, Ruth Powell of Albany, OR.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his daughter, Jolene Kotschwar; grandson, Ross Kotschwar; brothers, E.D “Jack”Powell and Gerald Powell; sisters, Marjorie Ann Powell, Carol Bollin and Ellen (Donald) Klaschen;
Casket bearers will be Bret Powell, Brad Powell, Ray Kotschwar, Brandon Powell, Clayton Powell and Calvin Klaschen.
