Robert Lee Steichen, age 82, of Alton, IA died peacefully on March 8th 2026 at Prairie Ridge Care Center surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 12, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, Iowa with Rev. Daniel Greving officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton. Visitation with family present will be 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, there will be a rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at the Church in Alton. Visitation will resume from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. www.fischfh.com
Lee was born on July 23rd, 1943 to Viola Steichen. Raised on his uncle’s farm in Alton, IA.
Lee received his education from St. Mary’s Academy in Alton, IA graduating in 1962. Lee was married to Loretta Kommes on September 3rd, 1966.
He was in the National guard. Lee lived with his wife Loretta and their four children at the Alton farm. When they sold the farm in 1984, they moved to their current home in Alton, IA. Lee worked at the Farmers Co-op and he ran his own lawn service called “Steichen Do-All”. He continued his career by working at Diamond Vogel Paint in Orange City, IA for over 20 years as a welder.
Lee was a member of St. Donatus Catholic Parish. Lee enjoyed hunting and fishing with the boys. He also loved woodworking, reading western books and watching western tv shows. He enjoyed collecting pens, tractors, and antique trucks and cars. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s activities.
Survivors include his wife Loretta Steichen, of Alton; his children, Dan and Candy Steichen of LeMars, Sheri and Brian Konz of Alton, and Dale Steichen of Alton; his 11 grandchildren, Amber, Austin, Kelsey, Aaron, Kylie, Bryce, Brooke, Lexi, Braden, Jacob, and Wyatt; 9 great-grandchildren, Bentley, Camden, Hudsyn, Barrett, Oakleigh, Kinsley, Maslyn, Myles and Beckett; his brothers, sisters and spouses, Dan and Raynata Streff, Rich and Becky Streff, Keith and Patty Streff, Cindy and Lloyd Lorenzen, Les and Mary Morin, and Tim Streff; his in-laws, Rich Kommes, Pete and Lavonne Galles, Mary and Bill Langley.
Preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Steichen; his mother, Viola Steichen; his uncle, Earl Steichen; his infant brother Mark Streff and brother Dave Streff; his in-laws, Albert and Mabel Kommes, Larry Kommes, Don (Lavonne) Kommes, Ken (Erlene) Kommes, Dolores (Jerry) Sitzmann, Florence (Butch) Thiel, Marlys Kommes.
Casket Bearers are Braden Konz, Wyatt Konz, Jacob Steichen, Bryce Alesch, Aaron Steichen and Austin Steichen.
