Sharon A. Jonas, 58 years old, of Remsen, IA died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a five month battle with cancer and respiratory complications.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 15, 2010, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, 2010. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. all at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, IA. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen.
Sharon was born on Dec. 13, 1951, at Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City, IA the daughter of Earl Fremont Riediger and Marvel Elise (Schulz) Riediger. She was raised in the Hinton area and graduated from Hinton Community School in 1970. She attended University of Iowa in the College of Nursing and graduated in May of 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Sharon worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals for three years. She returned to Hinton and began working for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City and caring for her ailing father.
On Aug. 18, 1978, she married Jeff Jonas at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, IA. Sharon and Jeff lived and farmed north of Remsen and she continued to work at now Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. She worked there for 32 years and raised 5 children. Other contributions, St. Mary’s school nurse, St. Mary’s school board, Catholic Daughters, Oktoberfest committee, St. Mary’s football medical responder, amongst others. Some of her hobbies included gardening, genealogy, mystery books and films, traveling, arts & crafts.
Casket Bearers will be Steven & Rusty Jonas, Patrick Mai, Blake Riediger, Corey Newberg, Riley Riediger.
Survivors include; Her husband Jeff Jonas of Remsen; son Steve Jonas & his wife Nicole of Boone, IA; daughter Audra Jonas of Merriam, KS; son Rusty Jonas & his wife Adrienne of St. Louis Park, MN; daughter Amber (Jonas) Waldschmitt & her husband Luke of Remsen; daughter Angela Jonas of Iowa City, IA. Grandchildren; Claire & Gabriel Jonas of Boone, IA. One sister Brenda Newberg of Sioux City, IA; brother Randy Riediger & his wife Cindy of Hinton; brother Terry Riediger & his wife Leslie of Lawton, IA. Mother-in-law Dorothy Jonas of Remsen; 5) Sisters-in-law, Debbie Boccumini & her husband, Victor of Orlando, FL; Andrea Mai of Orange City, IA; Mary Stene & her husband Jim of Lenexa, KS; Becky Engel & her husband Matt of Coto de Caza, CA; Nikki Schnepf & her husband Brian of Shawnee Mission, KS; One brother-in-law, Matt Jonas of Remsen, and many nieces and nephews.
