Shirley was born on May 22, 1928, in Smithland, Iowa, at her Grandpa and Grandma Frame’s home, to Alvin George Daniels and Irene (Frame) Daniels. They took their baby girl home to Smithland, Iowa.
St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa, was the site of her baptism on July 1, 1928. Shirley’s family moved several times during her growing up years. She made her First Holy Communion on June 25, 1939, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City, and also made her Confirmation there. The “Castle on the Hill” – Sioux City Central High School – is where Shirley graduated on June 7, 1946. After graduation, Shirley worked as a long-distance telephone operator at Northwestern Bell in Sioux City. She used the street cars to get around the city, or she walked.
Shirley met Paul Cosgrove Lang from Remsen, Iowa, at a dance at the Tomba Ballroom in Sioux City. Paul and Shirley were married on October 15, 1947, at St. Boniface’s Catholic Church. He taught her how to drive his new 1946 coupe. They made their home near Remsen on the family farm until retiring and moving into Remsen in March of 1981. Shirley entered the Barvarian Meadows Assisted Living in Remsen on December 4, 2017. On March 27, 2020, she moved to the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
Shirley was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, and of Christian Mothers. She helped serve at many funerals. She was an avid reader of library books and continued to do so until she moved to Happy Siesta. Crafting, knitting and crocheting blankets, and sewing bed and coverlet quilts became her passion. Also, collecting porcelain dolls and sewing the outfits for them herself and giving them to family at Christmas time. She certainly enjoyed her family with fun filled occasions and plenty of delicious food. Shirley also delivered meals for the Siouxland Meal site in Remsen, Iowa, from October, 1999, until she could not do so any more.
Survivors include: one daughter, Diane Joyce Ruden of Marcus, Iowa; and four sons, Dennis Paul and Deborah of Linn Creek, Missouri; Douglas Allen and Jolene of Polk City, Iowa; David Michael of Le Mars, Iowa; and Dwight Frank and Ruth of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Shirley had 14 grandchildren and 24 living great grandchildren.
