Born on May 21, 1951 to Elmer and Viola (Baack) Christensen in Granville, Iowa. Steve was raised with the values of hard work, integrity, and kindness that he carried with him throughout his life. He built a life centered on faith, family, community, and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Steve graduated from Spalding Catholic High School in 1969 where he then worked for Goodyear Tires, Vogel Paints and even attended school in Minneapolis to pursue a career in the airline industry before returning to the farm.
On April 16, 1977, Steve married the love of his life, Connie Freking, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville, Iowa. Together, they built a life grounded in love, creating a strong foundation for their family and the generations that followed.
Steve had a deep love for farming, which was more than a livelihood—it was a passion and a way of life. He found peace and purpose in working the land, taking pride in each season’s efforts and the legacy of stewardship he carried forward. His family farm, proudly recognized as a century farm, stood as a testament to generations of dedication, perseverance, and pride. Maintaining and contributing to that legacy was one of Steve’s greatest honors, and it remained close to his heart throughout his life.
Above all, Steve’s greatest joy was his family. He had a deep and unwavering love for his daughters, whom he cherished with all his heart, and he took immense pride in the women they became. His grandsons brought him endless happiness, and he treasured every moment spent with them—sharing stories, laughter, and the simple joys of being together. The love he gave to his family will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
Steve was deeply rooted in his community and will be remembered for his selfless service and willingness to lend a hand. He served as a dedicated firefighter and paramedic in Granville, always ready to answer the call when others were in need. He coached 5th through 8th grade girls basketball, positively impacting young athletes with his guidance, encouragement, and steady leadership. He also enjoyed camaraderie on the Granville slow-pitch softball team and the Granville Saddle Club. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and served as a Lay Director at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Known by many as the “go-to” guy, Steve was the one people relied on when things needed to get done. His skills as a handyman and fix-all were well known, and he generously shared his time and talents as a trusted presence for Spalding Catholic Schools and St. Joseph Parish.
Steve will also be remembered for his warm smile, contagious laugh, and striking blue eyes—qualities that reflected his kind spirit and made everyone feel welcome in his presence. He loved salted nut rolls, bit-o-honey, and Pepsi. His downtime, if any, was spent watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Los Angeles Dodgers and Green Bay Packers. He loved watching his grandsons play soccer and did not miss an opportunity to show them his love and support. He is known for giving rides in his tractors and the side-by-side.
He was known for his steady presence, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to those he cared about. Whether through his work, friendships, or involvement in the community, he exemplified reliability and compassion. He took pride in providing for his family and found joy in life’s simple moments—lending a helping hand, sharing conversation, and spending time with those closest to him.
He will be remembered for his sense of humor, quiet strength, and the genuine way he connected with others. Steve’s legacy lives on in the values he instilled and the memories he created.
Steve is survived by his loving family, including his wife, Connie, his daughters Shelly (Cory) Savage – Sergeant Bluff IA, and Shannon Christensen – West Des Moines IA, his grandsons Graham and Bennett Savage. His brothers and sisters, Joyce (Ron) Goergen – Peoria AZ, Norma Schreurs – Ankeny IA, Frank (Linda) Christensen – Ankeny IA, Dianne (Don) Krier – Sioux City IA.
