Terri was born on February 2, 1960, to Hubert Nothem and Bertha Bindner of Remsen, IA. After Terri graduated from Remsen-Union High School in 1978, she attended Iowa Lakes Community College for one year.
Terri returned to Remsen and married her high school sweetheart, Michael (Mike) Slota, at St. Mary’s Church on June 14th, 1980. The couple spent their forty-five years of marriage enjoying the outdoors through boating, snowmobiling, target shooting, and most recently, exploring the United States on their UTV. Their latest adventures included traversing treacherous rocky terrain in Utah, exploring the high-altitude landscape in Colorado, and navigating water crossings in the Great Smoky Mountains.
Terri could also frequently be found at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, cheering on her beloved Kansas City Chiefs. In addition to being a Season Ticket Member for over 20 years, she was able to attend Super Bowl LIV in Miami FL and witnessed the Chiefs win the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Terri also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and sharing her baking techniques with them. When her grandchildren were not nearby, Terri loved spending time with her many friends and was known to “light up a room.”
Throughout her life, Terri could be found working at a variety of locations. She spoke fondly of the position she retired from, as the Activities Coordinator at Happy Siesta Health Care Center. In addition to the patients and families she worked with in that role, she shared her infectious laugh with co-workers at K Products, Diamond Vogel, Advanced Brands, and Mrs. B’s. Terri also never turned down the opportunity to cultivate and took pride in both her garden and in assisting in numerous flower shops.
In addition to serving the community as a Remsen EMT for 20 years, Terri was also an avid volunteer at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) events.
Terri and Mike raised two daughters, Courtney and Rosalind (Rosie). Throughout their childhood, Terri ensured that her girls had a variety of activities to participate in by sharing her passion for team sports and being a girl scout leader. Terri also introduced the family to the American Taekwondo Association, where she earned her 2nd degree Black Belt.
In 1992, Terri was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). After undergoing numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, she received a lifesaving Bone Marrow Transplant from her sister Chris (Nothem) Reicks at Mayo Health in Rochester, MN on June 25, 1993. After almost 28 years of being cancer free, Terri was diagnosed with a Grade II Menigioma in 2021. She underwent brain surgery to have the tumor removed and then received radiation therapy in hopes of ensuring the tumor did not return.
In October of 2025, Terri was found to have a Stage IV Glioblastoma in her cerebellum. After removal of this tumor, she completed a rehabilitation program before transitioning into the care of hospice. Hospice care allowed her to be at home, surrounded by family during her last moments.
Terri was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Bertha (Bidner) Nothem; sister, Pam (Nothem) Shea; and brother, Robert (Bob) Nothem.
Terri is survived by her husband, Mike of Remsen, IA; daughters, Courtney (Paul) Eggers of Castle Rock, CO and Rosie (Josh) Steinbrecher of Elk Point, SD; four grandchildren, Zander Eggers, Jace Eggers, Keeley Steinbrecher, and Jaxon Steinbrecher; siblings, Theodore (Ted) Nothem of Remsen, IA, Michael (Becky) Nothem of Remsen, IA, and Chris Reicks (Paul Halder) of Tracy, CA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
