Thomas J. Bohnenkamp, 84 years old, of Remsen, IA died Monday, June 23, 2014 after a lengthy illness at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 27, 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Graveside Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 220 and V.F.W. Post 3328 of Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2014. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Tom was born on Dec. 25, 1929, at LeMars, IA the son of Joseph & Alma (Cosgrove) Bohnenkamp. He was raised and educated in Remsen area and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1947. After graduation he attended Loras College in Dubuque. With two years of college under his belt Tom had the opportunity to start farming. Tom entered the Iowa Army National Guard in 1948 and served until 1958.
On June 8, 1957, he married Kathleen Lyle at Garryowen, SD. They made their home near Remsen, where he has been a career farmer until his retirement. He still lived on the farm his father purchased in 1936 until he entered the Happy Siesta in Oct. 2013. Kathleen died Dec. 13, 2008.
Tom was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Catholic Order of Foresters. He was on the Board for the Remsen Farmers Co-op, Remsen Golf Course, North West Electric Co-op, St. Mary’s Finance Board, Plymouth County Cattleman, and also American Bank Board. Tom loved to play golf and was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include; his sister, Marjorie (Dave) Henrich of Tuscon, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bohnenkamp of Remsen and Jeanette Bohnenkamp of Ames, IA; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceeded in death by his parents, two brothers, Virgil and Richard.
Casketbearers will be Robert, Phillip, Roger and Jerry Bohnenkamp, Jerry and Jeff Henrich.
