Vera Sterrett

Vera L. Sterrett, of Marcus, Iowa, was welcomed into Heaven on April 25, 2025 at the age of 97.

Memorial service will be Tuesday May 6, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. with Ron Rice officiating at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument, Earnest-Johnson Chapel in Marcus, IA. There will be a visitation with family present from 1:00 p.m. until service time. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Anthon, IA. Vera was raised on a farm near Moville, Iowa, the 2nd of 10 children born April 9, 1928 to Lyle and Leona (Theisen) Crawford. Upon graduation from Moville High School, Vera worked as a teller at the First Trust & Savings Bank in Moville and the Security National Bank in Sioux City, however, being a wife and mother was her most treasured vocation. She married Walter Sterrett Jr. on Oct 3, 1953. They were blessed with 3 daughters: Lojean, Teresa, and Sonia. Walt and Vera were longtime residents of Anthon, Iowa, moving to Marcus, Iowa in 1988.

Vera was a member of the United Methodist Church. In her younger years, she was involved in Eastern Star, bowling league, golf, and card club. She loved to read cookbooks and try new recipes. Her scrumptious dinner rolls, caramel pecan rolls, flavored breads, chicken noodle soup, and potato salad, were just a few of her specialties. A wonderful homemade dessert was always on the kitchen counter, ready to share.

Spending time with family was Vera’s favorite activity. She especially enjoyed hosting holiday meals and decorating for the Christmas season. Her gifts were almost too pretty to open! Vera also loved photography, making many scrapbooks of family photos and keepsakes. During the summer, Vera could be found outside tending to her flowers. She had a delicate touch and could make any plant flourish.

Vera was gentle, kind, and humble, with a genuine servant’s heart. Always a woman of integrity and grace. She was soft-spoken and tiny in stature, but mighty in faith and love for her Savior. Her prayers supported her family and community in countless ways.

Vera adored and cherished her husband Walt, all the days of her life. We grieve our loss here on earth, but smile to think of them reunited, with Jesus in Heaven.

Those left to cherish her memory are daughters, Lojean (Jim) Petersen of Ames, Iowa; Teresa (Joe) Bolton of Kingsley, Iowa; and Sonia Jones of Marcus, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, Sarah (Nathan) Buss, Joshua (fiancé Ioana) Petersen, Betsy Bolton, Britney (Brody) Moore, Kurt Jones, Nick Jones, and Kristi (fiancé Travis) Jones; great- grandchildren, Macee (fiancé Jackson) Buss, Joscelyn (Solomon) Farner, Jewels, Ireland, Laiken, and Vaeh Buss, Savion Coleman, Danarii Michel, Amalia West, Lucian Petersen, Blake and Mason Moore, and Skylar Jones; sister Shirley Kurasz of Lawton, IA, sister & brother in law Shirley & John Beach of Navarre, FL, sister in-law Shirley Crawford of Moville, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Sterrett Jr; son-in-law Steven Jones; parents, Lyle and Leona Crawford; siblings: Audrey (Wilbur) Rippke, Phyllis (Kenneth) Anderson, Doris (Eldon) Mortensen, Kathryn Smith, Bethene Crawford, Kendall Crawford, Gerald (Mary) Crawford, Dale Crawford; and her in laws, Walter Sr and Martha Sterrett, and Marion (Chester) Speer.
