Verena E. Pottebaum, 102 years old, of Alton, IA, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, IA.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 22, 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. & a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Verena was born Dec. 15, 1911, at rural Granville, IA, the daughter of Math & Anna (Mousel) Konz. She was raised in the Granville and Alton area and went to country school and St. Mary’s Academy in Alton. When she was 13 her mother passed away and she stayed at home to take care of her 7 younger siblings.
On Jan. 17, 1938 she married Edmund Pottebaum at Alton. The couple farmed near Alton until moving into Alton in 1972. Edmund passed away Nov. 16, 1988. She became a resident of Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Dec. 2008.
Verena was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, church guild and St. Mary’s Rosary Society.
Survivors include: her three children, Marvin (Annette) Pottebaum of Remsen, Diane (Bob) Alesch, Pat (Tony) Newman both of Alton; 14 grandchildren, 27, great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Esther Konz of Alton.
Preceeded by: her parents, one granddaughter-in-law, Emily Pottebaum, her seven siblings, Magnus (Honey) Konz, Martin (Loretta) Klein, Leonard Konz, Norbert (Rose) Wolf, Robert (Marion) Kinney, Lester and LeRoy Konz; seven brothers-in-law, Joe (Matilda) Pottebaum, George and Edward Pottebaum, Herman (Clara) Pottebaum, Otto (Irene) Pottebaum, Levern & Arthur Pottebaum; five sisters-in-law, Josephine Pottebaum, Elenora (Arnold) Pins, Clara Pottebaum, Viola (John) Sullivan and Emma Pottebaum.
Casket bearers will be Dave and Dale Pottebaum, Jeff and Linda Alesch, Ryan and Matt Newman.
Honorary Bearers will be Greg, Brian and Steve Pottebaum, Judy Delperdang, Jean Christiansen, Dave, Lisa and Nikki Newman.
