Vernon Reistoffer

Vernon Reistoffer, 82 years old, of Granville, IA, died Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, IA. 
            Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 22, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville, with Rev. Richard Ball officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Granville.  Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2010.  There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., and vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville.  Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
            Vernon was born June 15, 1927, on a farm north west of Granville, IA, the son of Leo & Celia (Gloden) Reistoffer.  He was raised in Granville.  He was raised and educated in the Granville area.  He attended country school for one year, then the next seven years at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Granville.  He then helped his father on the family farm.  In Feb. 1946 he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served until Sept. 1947.  He then returned home to farm with his father.
            On Dec. 29, 1951 he married Jo Ann Schreier at St. James Catholic Church in LeMars, IA.  The couple made their home in California where Vernon worked at Douglas Aircraft Factory for four months.  They then returned to Granville to farm.  When his parents retired and moved into Granville in the fall of 1954, they moved onto the home farm south west of Granville and continued farming.  Over the years he and his brother Ray helped each other farm.  After a very serious farm related accident in Sept. 1994, he turned the entire farming operation to his son-in-law Kevin Petersen.  After his recovery, he enjoyed very much to help Kevin during planting & Harvest season, planting and caring for trees & digging in the garden.  Jo Ann died Jan. 20, 2005. 
        He enjoyed driving around the country to scenic spots with his family, riding along with his cousin to Chicago hauling meat in an 18 wheeler refrigerated truck, visiting with his cousins, all types of music except opera, and was a baseball fanatic of the St. Louis Cardinals since 1942.  
Vernon was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville.
        Survivors include; Two daughters, Diane Reistoffer of Granville, & Noreen & her husband Kevin Petersen of Sheldon, IA; One sister-in-law, Mary Lou Reistoffer of Remsen, IA. Numerous nieces & nephews.
Preceded by: his parents, one brother Ray, one brother-in-law, Vernon Schreier & his wife Neva, one sister-in-law, Marlene Kurth & her husband Jerry.
        Casket Bearers will be, Jim Schlichte, Tony Auchstetter, Donald Budden, Stephen, Glenn & John Reistoffer, Jack Goebel.
        Honorary Bearers will be Gerald Goebel & Clifford Schlichte.
