Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, IA, with Father Daniel Greving officiating and Deacon Dan Goebel assisting. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Alton. Visitation with family present will be Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. with parish rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at the church in Alton. Visitation will resume 1 hour prior to the funeral on Thursday at the church. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen, IA. Wayne was born Jan. 30, 1954 the son of Joseph & Caroline (Thorman) Horkey. He was raised on the family farm near Granville and received his education from Spalding Catholic, graduating in 1972. He then attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.
On July 13, 1974 he married the love of his life Jane Streff at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, IA. The couple made their home in Alton where Wayne worked as a farm hand for Lyle Schroeder, Farmers Co-Op in Alton, Klein Reality in Remsen, Sheldon Livestock and then farmed with his father-in-law. Wayne had a passion for farming until his death.
Wayne was a very talented baseball player. He was a gifted catcher and hitter and was drafted by various major league baseball teams, his favorite being the New York Yankees. He will forever be known for the notorious home run at Remsen’s ball field that landed on the running track.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he was a past president of the board, Spalding Catholic bus board member, Alton Farmers Co-Op Elevator board member. He enjoyed baseball, riding horses, hunting, fishing, coffee at the coffee shop and his 57 chevy. He volunteered as a junior high basketball coach on his children’s teams. Most of all his greatest love was being “Bacha” to his grandkids and watching them grow up, play sports and enjoying the family farm.
Wayne was a selfless man, putting family & friends first. Wayne was a man of true character & integrity that will live on through his family. Wayne was a big man with an even bigger heart.
Survivors include his wife Jane of Alton; his three children, Mike (Denise) Horkey of Alton, Luke (Katie) Horkey of Alton, Kendra (Lucas) Hough of Graettinger, IA; 11 grandchildren, Zach (Kelsey) Kellen, Allison (Tyler) Kanaly, Morgan (Abby) Kellen, Mason & Brayden Horkey, Lane, Aubrey & Riley Horkey, Lauryn, Cole & Grant Hough; 4 great-grandchildren and one on the way; one brother, Dan Horkey & special friend Nancy Hinz of Granville, IA; In-laws, Bill (Janys) Schroeder of Kingsley, IA, MaryAnn Jobe of Neosha MO, Patti (Ed) Walsh of Sioux City, IA, Bev (Marc) Thoene of Alton, IA.
He was preceded by his parents; his In-laws; three sisters-in-law, Donna Horkey, Marge Schroeder and Betty Streff; one brother-in-law, Dale Jobe.
Casket bearers will be Zach Kellen, Morgan Kellen, Mason Horkey, Brayden Horkey, Adam Schroeder & Kory Riley.
